some tips on how to make bosses easier if youre feeling theyre too hard:

play a ranged physical dps class. that way you can hang back to keep an eye on the arena and what the boss is doing without having to worry about needing to stand still long enough to complete an induction

on that note, inductions are considered finished before the bar is full. you can usually move right before it fills and still have it go off, but it takes some trial and error to figure out how close you can cut it

move your ui around. my own life was made immeasurably easier when i put the target right above my hotbar so i wouldnt have to pay attention to both the top and bottom of the screen at the same time, but try stuff out and see what works best for you

the best time to mitigate an attack is right before the boss finishes casting it. the second best time is as soon as the mit becomes available, every time it becomes available

use addle and feint. you almost never see these used in casual content and it's a waste because they really are extremely useful skills at any level

use arm's length and surecast. there are some knockbacks they dont work on but those are rare. if you know youre gonna get pushed, use these and you probably won't get pushed

take advantage of duty support. the npcs know the mechanics. watch them and let them teach you

particle effects cant hurt you (usually). with the exception of puddles that stay on the ground for a while or layered stacks like akh morn, as long as youre not standing on the marker when it disappears (or are if it's a stack), you're in the clear. feel free to move through the animation if necessary. more and more mechanics require you to do so to be in position for the next one in time

it's usually fine to let spread markers overlap. just, yknow, make sure another person isnt in yours (though its the responsibility of anyone without a spread to keep themselves out of harms way)

when in doubt, ask your party members. it's extremely rare to match with a group of randos and have everyone be a first-timer. most players are happy to help, and the ones that know the mechanics but are bad at explaining them will usually just stick a marker on themselves (usually a triangle) for you to follow

read your tool tips. boss fights are as much a test of how well you know your class as they are your ability to read and react to mechanics. unless youre playing a healer or paladin, youre going to use your entire kit, so make sure you know what everything does

on that note, freecure is a scam. once you get cure ii/benefic ii, you will never need cure or benefic again. keep them on your hotbar for when you get synced content if you wish, but otherwise you do not need them. do not use them

if you play multiple classes, try to keep skills that do the same/similar things at the same spot on your hotbar. this isn't always possible bc despite what some may claim, not all classes of the same type are actually identical, but it will save you a lot of headaches

entirely new and unique mechanics are rare to the point of being nigh nonexistent. everything is a remix of something else and practicing in lower level content can actually be a big help

look up guides. the internet is full of them in pretty much whatever form works best for you (though they can be of admittedly variable quality)

turn down party effects. theyre on one of the tabs under character configuration > controls. if you put them on minimum you can still see heals and such but you wont have your screen constantly full of explosions

turn on target health percentage. this one is under character configuration > ui. it lets you better see how close the boss is to going down

make summons smaller. we all love titan's ass but not when it's the only thing you can see. "/petsize all small" will make this problem go away

relax and have fun. panicking leads to mistakes, which can lead to worse mistakes. if you need to take a second to breathe, do so. your party members probably wont mind waiting a minute or two between pulls

Submission Guidelines

Each entry should be a complete, playable roleplaying game in two hundred words or fewer. Coming in lower is fine, though you're welcome to try to hit 200 words exactly if you want an extra challenge.

This is an informal game jam; entries are not curated or judged, no eligibility rules are enforced, no winners are chosen, and the organising parties explicitly refuse to define the terms "word" or "RPG". If you wish to participate, you can follow these steps:

Step 1: If you're unfamiliar with 200-word RPGs, read a bunch of previous years' entries (linked above), or browse the 200 Word RPG Challenge archives at https://200wordrpg.github.io/ to get in the proper headspace. (Note: this blog is not affiliated with the 200 Word RPG Challenge; its archives are provided for reference only.)

Step 2: Write your own 200-word RPG. If you're not sure of your word count, you can use the counter at https://200wordrpg.github.io/wordcount to check. If you disagree with how this tool defines "word", feel free to use a different counting method – adherence to the word limit is on the honour system anyway.

Step 3: Reblog the current event's main post (linked above when an event is active) and append your 200-word RPG in the reblog. Please do not submit your entry as a reblog to the post you are reading right now.

My dad was fond of a practical joke joke.

Err... a joke that was a practical joke.

He grew up working at a full service gas station that his dad managed. It was him and a bunch of other smelly guys wrenching cars and causing mayhem. A classic environment for shenanigans.

There was one guy who always drank everyone's soda so my dad filled a Coke can with motor oil.

My dad electrified the metal workbench so everyone would get a shock whenever they reached for a tool.

And apparently, there was this human monkey guy who would climb the 50 foot sign and wave to people driving by on the highway.

Dudes being dudes.

Anyway, in the 50s, surreal humor started to catch on and the "no soap radio" practical joke joke was born.

The best documented original was...

"The elephant and the hippopotamus were taking a bath. And the elephant said to the hippo, 'Please pass the soap.' The hippo replied, 'No soap, radio.'"

The version my dad heard was...

"Two polar bears are sitting in a bathtub. The first one says, "Pass the soap." The second one says, "No soap, radio!"

I think the point was to remix the joke to make it your own.

My dad's version was...

"Two polar bears were sitting on a cake of ice. One fell off and the other yelled, "RADIO!"

As I writer I just love "cake of ice." It just hits your brain better than "sitting in a bathtub."

The idea was to confuse. And when the person says they don't get it, you just repeat the joke. Maybe you say it louder or with more emphasis on one of the words—alluding to some hidden clue. And you just keep repeating it every time they ask for an explanation.

It works best in a crowd where most are in on the joke. And the prankee just gets more and more confused and frustrated. Because everyone else is geniunely laughing their ass off. So they feel like it is a real joke because you can't fake or manufacture that kind of laughter.

And if you get a victim who is determined to figure it out, this laughter can last for quite a while. And it just builds and builds to the point of exhaustion.

It's actually pretty fascinating from a psychological point of view.

And as far as pranks go, it was pretty harmless.

My dad also had this napkin trick where he folded it into an ambiguous shape and asked people to pull both ends. And it would unfurl into the shape of a brassiere.

Most people love that one but we had a family friend get very upset. We could never figure out if he was just a super manly man or had some cross-dressing secret he feared was exposed.

An important thing to understand about revolutions is that regardless of theme and goal they offer no real guarantee of major overhaul of the--the institutional habits of a place.

When you hear of a post-revolutionary government engaging in brutal excesses of some kind, there's a very high chance that if you look closely, it will turn out to be a slight remix of the bullshit of the previous regime.

Easy one is the French Revolution, with its notorious spree of increasingly off-topic decapitations. Easy to center the social destabilization and lure of guillotine and so forth in interpreting this, but also.

The kings of France had for a long time been inordinately fond, even by the standards of medieval monarchs, of staging highly conspicuous mass executions of traitors, as an example to the rest.

The high-handed nationalization strategies of the soviet government and the speed with which Lenin pivoted to making war against his own peasants for withholding resources becomes perfectly legible when you place it in the context that imperial russia had been working on centralizing and modernizing the state via methods like 'nationalizing the serfs' (transferring increasing numbers of unfree farmers, which was a whole lot of them, to crown/state ownership and then leasing some of them out to large landholders for $$) for the past century or so; soviet rule reorganized a lot of things but didn't on some levels change the attitudes and patterns of how government related to the people that much at all, when you came down to it.

In post-Revolutionary Iran, the veil police roaming around oppressing women on the street becomes much less shocking and more predictable when you know that the Pahlavi shahs, in their modernization-by-fiat project, had the cops go around Tehran beating men who wore incorrect hats and stripping women who persisted in veiling to their underwear. In the street.

Very high statistical chance that your revolution will not come equipped with new tools for the exercise of power, or a whole new population of individuals with no preconceptions or habits to interpret and enact your policies, and will consequently tend to keep doing the same things slightly differently.

Anyone who doesn't understand how likely this is is especially unlikely to avoid it.

Other hopefully helpful tips from someone who does literally write fight scenes for fun:

People don't pay attention to small details when they're fighting, so you can be vague on scenery, weapon type, what's happening outside the fight.

You won't notice if you've been hurt bc adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

Fighting makes you tired very quickly, so no one's like marathoning several fights in a row Fatigue makes people slow too, so you can showcase this by mentioning limbs getting heavy, people getting clipped when they previously dodged, straight up punching them in the face

Keep sentences short (like don't do the above second sentence). Fight scenes are fast, so keep one or two actions in a sentence. Generally I use a single 'and' in a sentence and limit anything defined by a comma, using this line here as an example of what I mean.

Fighting does not need to be a blow by blow, so don't be ashamed if it's not "he blocked the sword and parried with his own. Something shifted in his peripheral and clanged off his shield". You can be as vague as you're comfortable with, just describe something else that's relevant to the fight instead. (for example, The Phantom Thief has no business being that goddamn fast, in Souji’s expert opinion. He keeps sliding in and out of Souji’s peripheral, shadows clinging to his coattails. It’s only the flash of his knife and the red of his gloves that manage to catch Souji’s attention, always followed quickly by a Shadow's shrill cry. I'm not telling you anything specific about how this person is fighting, but what I have told you lets you know that they are very fast, very lethal and very efficient.)

Play around with the verbs you use to describe a weapon (i.e. slashing, swinging, cleaving etc for swords/bladed weapons) and stick with the ones you're comfortable with bc there isn't any need to go overboard with a thesaurus - you're just making things harder for yourself

If you're a visual learner, watch combat sparring/fight scenes videos on YouTube to get an idea about how people move when using X, Y or Z (also good for helping you choreograph the fight in your own mind). My personal go-tos are things like Netflix's Daredevil, Arcane, MCU (hello Cap's shield I love you), Dead Fantasy (esp for choreography), that O'Ren Ishii vs The Bride from Kill Bill, RWBY, etc etc.

If you're a person who writes to music, pick a song that works. Something fast with a lot of percussion for gunfights (mimics gunshots) or fistfights, something more fluid - like with strings or less staccato sounds - for sword/staff fights, and literally whatever works for weirder weapons like Twilight's ball and chain.

Have an idea of the environment. Know what enemies you're gonna include (and have a general idea of how you want to beat them). Doesn't have to be anything in-depth, but if you've got a Darknut for example, have like one or two ideas about how to get rid of it (i.e. Twi/Time using hidden skills, Four/Wind knee-capping it with a hammer, whatever).

And finally, experiment. Look up weird weapons. Get a feel for common ones. Fight scenes have a rhythm to them. It takes a bit of time to work it out, but think of it as the same as any narrative arc. There's a beginning, a rising tension, a climax and a resolution. Don't be afraid to write what you want to happen as dot points (honestly, this is more effective than you might think for getting the sentence length right).

It takes a bit of time, like all writing does, but it's just practise. I have so many half-finished fight scenes bouncing around my hard drive.

Your peers do not doubt your skill set. However, it feels like whenever you hit a goal or whenever you experience a win, the wheel is turning sharply for you. Every hit of luck is met with a hit of misfortune. It does not have to be major, though it feels this way to you. It's something you might already be anticipating. INTRO: Oi, you ever boot up a DOSBox emulator and feel your soul whisper "Amen"? No? Then saddle up, you absolute fetus, 'cause we’re going full pilgrimage through the haunted cathedrals of dead code, cursed shareware, and disc rot salvation. This is for the ones who dream in .BMPs, weep in MIDI, and hit “Yes to All” when copying cracked ZIPs from forgotten FTPs at 3AM. Abandonware ain’t just nostalgia—it’s digital necromancy. And some of us are bloody good at it.

DEAD SOFTWARE = HOLY SHRINE

Let’s be clear: abandonware is software that’s been, well, abandoned. The devs moved on. The publisher collapsed in a puff of VC smoke. The website's now a spammy shell selling beard oil or crack cocaine. The software? Unupdated. Unsupported. Gloriously obsolete.

So why does launching Hover! or Starship Titanic in 2025 feel like entering a chapel with weird lighting and a dial-up modem choir?

Because it’s sacred, mate.
